I recently read the book ‘2 states’ written by Mr. five point someone Chetan Bhagat. Being a person bamboozled by his debut (you wont believe it, I felt so rebelled after reading ‘five point’ that I wrote two exams without even reading the text book) I felt let down by his second attempt at calling the shots in his call centre narrative. Though his third attempt was not one among the three mistakes he made, it could not even come near the magic cast by five point someone. Stated my previous encounters with his books I could say just one thing after reading his fourth book (may be the second book that would stay in my collection), “The five pointer is back”.
Though the book is supposed to be about his life story of how he got married to his girl friend, it’s basically about a North Indian guy, who finds it difficult to survive in a South Indian city, with all the political incorrectness and one liners which made ‘five point’ a classic on its own right. It also has few allusions that suggests it’s the continuation of five point someone. Cautionary note to all South Indians who are not sportive enough to laugh at yourself, here’s a book that mocks at the behaviours and habits, of your entire clan.
Being a Tamilian myself I felt uncomfortable and sometimes a little hurt by some of the catch phrases used by some characters in the narrative. But I believe they are not the ideas of the writer, but he reflects only how typical North Indians would react to their countrymen from the other half. Again it’s his political incorrectness and boldness to put in dialogues that are pretty common, but rarely published for fear of being torn down by the moral brigade and media. The writer finds the Madras habit of reading Hindu and teetotalism little odd, and takes no mercy in mocking at any eccentricities a Madarasi may exhibit.
He seems to have did some homework on the city’s geography and cult, cos he uses some words and places very native to Chennaite, like Grand sweets and Sangeethas. But one has to point out that he has portrayed only miniscule sect of the Tamil society, i.e Tamil Brahmins. There’s a large population which he missed to read or failed to portray in his book. But still, it makes a very entertaining read. He actually mentions a ‘Tamil’ vulgar tongue, whose lip movement alone would be enough to ban a scene by the censor board.
Having said this I would say that it’s a pure entertainer and worth the 95 spent on it.
